The Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) was formed in 1993 by a few committed professionals belonging to the Indian plumbing industry who considered it their responsibility and duty to propagate the cause of this critical but hitherto ignored profession in this country. It is indeed evidence of the camaraderie amongst them that the original team which ventured to form the Association is still together and contributing to the growth of this organisation. IPA is a not-for-profit organisation and its affairs are run by individual volunteers who devote a part of their valuable time and finances for the noble cause espoused by the Association. From a humble beginning in 1993, IPA today has close to one thousand members from all over the nation, representing every segment of the trade including consultancy, manufacturing, contracting, trading etc. IPA has been head-quartered in New Delhi right from its inception and presently has ten chapters at major cities in India – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Hyderabad Pune, Jaipur, Kolkata and coimbatore.
IPA has been an active member of the global body of plumbing organisations – the World Plumbing Council (WPC). WPC has representation from several countries and is managed by an Executive Board Consisting of seven Directors elected from members representing different countries. For the first time, one of the Directors in the WPC Executive Board is an Indian – The current President of IPA.
IPA has released the Uniform Plumbing Code – India (UPC–I) at the 6th Indian Plumbing Conference at Mumbai , February 11-12, 2008. This document has been formed by IPA in conjunction with the world-renowned International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials of USA which is responsible for publishing codes and practices for the plumbing industry in the United States and several other countries. For the review and implementation of UPC-I, IPA had hand-picked a panel of experts and formed a Code Committee.
Every month, IPA publishes India 's only journal devoted to the profession – Indian Plumbing Today. Articles published are authored by renowned experts in the trade from India and the rest of the world. The magazine reaches all stake holders in the Indian building industry, every month.
IPA realizes that the fulfillment of its mission of highlighting the vital importance of potable water and safe sanitation to our vast population is a gigantic task. To create awareness on this important mission among members of the building industry and the common public, IPA conducts conferences and exhibitions all over the country.
In order to fill the present void in education/training sector in the plumbing profession, IPA has now mobilised resources and launched the Indian Institute of Plumbing, with its very first chapter in the Oxford of India, the City of Pune . Joining hands with existing institutions in other cities and towns, IIP has ambitious plans to spread its activities throughout the nation during the years to come. Like the IPA, the IIP too is a non profit organisation; with the mission of uplifting the standards of the plumbing profession in India . IIP is registered as a Charitable Trust and has eminent plumbing professionals as its trustees and advisors. One of the latest achievements of IIP is the opening of a Plumbing Lab showcasing modern plumbing applications in College of Engineering Pune .
